So what’s the big deal about Jesus? Why did He have to die on the cross? Does God really love everyone, even those that have done some wicked things in their lives? Will God accept you as you are? How does salvation work? How can you become “saved”?
The good news is that God is love, He does love you, and He wants you to come to Him as you are. He doesn’t want anyone to be lost. He doesn’t care what you’ve done in your past, He only wants you to repent of your sins (surrender to Him), accept that He died for your sins (that you are helpless without Jesus), and believe that Jesus is your Lord and Savior (have faith that Jesus’ righteousness covers you and have assurance that you’re saved).
1 John 4:8 – “…God is love.”
John 15:12 – “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”
In fact, God loves us so much, He sent His Son to take our punishment for sin. John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 15:13-14 – “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Jesus laid down His life for us because He loves us.
Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Because we are all sinful, our punishment is death, but Jesus took our punishment for us so that we can have eternal life. The incredible thing is that Jesus would have died to save just one of us!
John 10:14-17 – “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine…and I lay down my life for the sheep…Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.”
If we have faith in Jesus and believe that He died for our sins, we are assured that His righteousness covers us and our sins are forgotten and wiped away. Our slate is wiped clean and we are seen as righteous in God’s eyes.
Revelation 1:5 – “…him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood…”
Isaiah 61:10 – “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness…”
Isaiah 64:6 – “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”
Our own righteousness is as filthy rags. We must be covered by the righteousness of Jesus in order to be considered righteous.
Only the righteous will be in the kingdom of God.
2 Peter 3:13 – “Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”
Romans 14:17 – “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”
