Should Christians Eat Pork?

Pork with Logo

Should Christians eat pork? I would argue that if you study your bible carefully, the answer you will find is that Christians should not eat pork or any other unclean foods.

Here are two verses that make it very clear that Christians should not eat pork.

Isaiah 66:15-17 says, “For behold, the Lord will come with fire And with His chariots, like a whirlwind, To render His anger with fury, And His rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by His sword The Lord will judge all flesh; And the slain of the Lord shall be many. Those who sanctify themselves and purify themselves, To go to the gardens After an idol in the midst, Eating swine’s flesh and the abomination and the mouse, Shall be consumed together,” says the Lord. (NKJV)

Isaiah 65:3-4 says, “A people who provoke Me to anger continually to My face; Who sacrifice in gardens, And burn incense on altars of brick; Who sit among the graves, And spend the night in the tombs; Who eat swine’s flesh, And the broth of abominable things is in their vessels…”  (NKJV)

But wasn’t the practice of abstaining from pork just a Jewish thing? No, and here is one example of why the health rules are not just a Jewish ‘thing’.

The distinction between clean and unclean foods was made in Genesis during Noah’s time. He was told to take unclean animals into the ark by twos and clean animals by sevens.

Genesis 7:2-3 says, “You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female…”

Many bible scholars believe this is because the vegetation on the earth would have been destroyed during the flood and that Noah and his family would of had the need to supplement their diet and supplies with meat to survive. This is when the eating of clean meat was authorized by God. This happens close to 300 years before any Jew existed. The distinction between clean and unclean foods was made for all mankind and not just for the Jewish nation.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 says, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.”

If taking unclean things into the temple is considered defiling the temple of God, then why would you put unclean foods into your body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit?

The next two verses imply that if you can eat to the glory of God, then you can also not eat to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Here is another video from Pastor Walter Veith (Amazing Discoveries Ministry) which explains in detail the principle of clean and unclean.
