What Happens After Jesus Returns?

Cross with Logo

Have you ever wondered what events take place after the second coming of Jesus Christ? Did you know that the events that take place occur over a thousand years and the details are all in the bible? God’s plan isn’t finished at the second coming of Jesus Christ, there’s still more exciting events to occur according to the bible.

Note: The thousand years is referred to as the millennium by bible scholars although the actual word millennium is not in the bible. The concept and the words “thousand years” is in the bible and can be found in Revelation chapter 20, verses 4-10. The word millennium is derived from two latin words, Mille which is 1000 and Annium which is Years.

Here are the order of events as found in the bible:

Second coming of Jesus Christ Righteous dead are resurrected Righteous living are caught up to meet Christ in the air Wicked living burned up by the brightness of Christ Wicked dead remain dead Earth is torn up, desolate, and dark (left void) Satan bound to a lifeless earth with the fallen angels Righteous in heaven reviewing judgements New Jerusalem descends to earth The wicked dead are resurrected and Satan is unbound (end of the thousand years) The wicked attack New Jerusalem God destroys the wicked with fire and brimstone Satan and fallen angels are thrown into the lake of fire God creates a new earth and a new heavens

Now to provide one or more bible verses to support each event (there are numerous verses to support the events listed here, but we’ll list only one or two each to keep this post from getting too long). All verses are from the New King James Version (NKJV). We’ll also embed some videos below that explain the millennium (if you don't like to read).

Second coming of Jesus Christ: 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”

Righteous dead are resurrected: 1 Thessalonians 4:16, “…the dead in Christ will rise first.”; also in 1 Corinthians 15:52, “…and the dead will be raised incorruptible…”

Righteous living are caught up to meet Christ in the air: 1 Thessalonians 4:17, “Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”

Wicked living burned up by the brightness of Christ: 2 Thessalonians 2:8, “…and destroy with the brightness of His coming.”

Wicked dead remain dead: Revelation 20:5, “But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished.”

Earth is torn up, desolate, and dark (left void): Jeremiah 4:23-26, “I beheld the earth, and indeed it was without form, and void; And the heavens, they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and indeed they trembled, And all the hills moved back and forth. I beheld, and indeed there was no man, And all the birds of the heavens had fled. I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a wilderness, And all its cities were broken down At the presence of the Lord, By His fierce anger.”; and Isaiah 24:1, “Behold, the Lord makes the earth empty and makes it waste, Distorts its surface…”

Satan bound to a lifeless earth with the fallen angels: Revelation 20:1-3, “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.”; and Isaiah 24:22, “They will be gathered together, As prisoners are gathered in the pit, And will be shut up in the prison; After many days they will be punished.”

Righteous in heaven reviewing judgments: Revelation 20:4, “And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”; and 1 Corinthians 6:2-3, “Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?”

New Jerusalem descends to earth: Revelation 21:2-3, “Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.”

The wicked dead are resurrected and Satan is unbound (end of the thousand years): Revelation 20:7-8, “Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth…”

The wicked attack New Jerusalem: Revelation 20:9, “They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city…”

God destroys the wicked with fire and brimstone: Revelation 20:9, “And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.”

Satan and fallen angels are thrown into the lake of fire: Revelation 20:10, “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone…”; and Matthew 25:41, “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels…’”

God creates a new earth and a new heavens: Isaiah 65:17, “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.”

Again, there are many, many more verses in the Bible to support this outline of events, normally referred to as the millennium. Here are a couple videos of Pastors explaining the events of the millennium, but I encourage you to read the Bible and check it out for yourself.
